Phone Review: RedMagic –A Gaming Phone for Everyday Use

The technical advancements that led to the development of smartphones that are more powerful than some PCs now means that we are getting gaming phones capable of playing powerful games without a lag in performance.

Now, gaming smartphones might not be as powerful as gaming laptops, but many gaming smartphones these days are advanced enough to be taken seriously by hard-core gamers.

And the RedMagic 7 by Nubia us no different.

RedMagic Build

The RedMagic comes with a metallic body with the aesthetics that we’ve come to expect from gaming phones. It features a bright 700-nit screen, a 6.8 inch full HD screen with a high 1080×2400 resolution.

The phone has an in-built fan for cooling as well as two touch pads on the sides for easier controlling when gaming.

The phone comes in three variants. The base model, Obsidian, comes with a 12GB RAM and 128 GB storage, while the mid one, Pulsar, comes with 16GB RAM and 256 GB storage. The top model, Supernova, also comes with 256 storage memory but with an 18GB RAM and a clear back glass.

Performance

The RedMagic features the latest Qualcomm chip –Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. This chip makes the RedMagic perform to its utmost strength with no lags, high resolution and faster frame rates.

The AMOLED screen, with a jaw dropping 144Hz refresher rate, which increases to 165Hz for game immersion, also makes for more engaging gaming.

The phones dual speakers, one at the top and the other at the bottom allow for surround sound, with the speakers getting pretty loud and punchy.

However, with time, the phone does get a little too hot, but this does not diminish its performance.

Everyday use

The latest chip, great screen, and high RAM means that this phone breezes through daily tasks without getting into second gear. Its 4500 mAh battery, despite needing to carry a bright screen and latest chip, can last the whole day on normal usage.

When it comes to cameras, the RedMagic has an 8MP selfie camera and a triple camera at the back – 64 MP main, 8 MP ultra wide and 2 MP macro. For casual photography, the photo images are great, though they do not stand up against photo quality from other flagships like the Samsung S22 Ultra or the iPhone 13s.

The FHD AMOLED screen also means that videos will be crisp, clear and sharp.

Verdict

The RedMagic is a gaming phone that has the aesthetics to match, but is well competent in other areas to make it a normal, everyday phone. However, the inside fan, which has three vents on the sides, means the phone is not water proof; so keep the phone far away from water or dust.

Score – 4.4 out of 5.
